Chief Engineer + Myr Superion?

Asked by JDMCRIB 9 years ago

(I hope this is the right forum)

Anyway, I've been on hiatus from the game in a while, and I saw a pretty interesting and cheap Modern list somewhere. It was a Mono- Artifact Ramp deck featuring Chief Engineer and Grand Architect. It looked really cool, but a card in particular caught my eye: Myr Superion. It was almost too perfect in my mind, but I just had to be sure so that I could playtest correctly.

1: Can you cast Myr Superion with Convoke from Chief Engineer? I'm not sure if tapping a creature for Convoke counts as "spending mana produced by creatures."

2: Can you tap a creature with summoning sickness for Convoke? As far as I can remember, summoning sickness only prohibits creatures from tapping for abilities and attacking on the turn they're played. Does Convoke get around this?

Thanks in advance.

I'm just going to move this to the rules Q&A.

1: Yes, you can cast Myr Superion with convoke, because convoke's rules state that you can tap a creature instead of paying mana, so it gets around the "spend only mana produced by creatures" clause.

  1. Yes, summoning sickness only applies to attacking and abilities which use the tap symbol, not to convoke or abilities which read "tap an untapped creature" instead.

JDMCRIB - Just remember to mark the answer you found most helpful using the "mark as answer" button.

Also just as a heads up - Renowned Weaponsmith and Vedalken Engineer are probably the best 2 creatures to allow you to ramp into artifacts. I played a deck that used those two to play turn 4 Batterskull or Wurmcoil Engine etc.

ChiefBell - I chose Derpling's since it was the first answer. Also, I didn't even know those cards existed, but they're pretty sweet! I'll try to run some.

Or you can use Heartless Summoning and just watch their jaw drop on turn 2.
