Can you destroy emblems?

Asked by neozzero 13 years ago

Lets say my opponent uses Sorin, Lord of InnistradMTG Card: Sorin, Lord of Innistrad's -2 and gets an emblem. can i Beast WithinMTG Card: Beast Within the emblem? Basically is it a permanent, and if so, whats its color, and or converted mana cost?

I'm asking this because i feel as if planeswalker emblems are going to get alot more popular, and so i want to know how to deal with them more appropriately. the same goes for elspath, and koth emblems.

You can't destroy an emblem because it is not a permanent.

113.5. An emblem is neither a card nor a permanent. Emblem isn't a card type.

As it stands, there is no card that interacts with emblems (other than creating them) and that is sort of the point.

R&D wanted an actual game object to represent the "For the rest of the game" effects. See the original printing of Elspeth, Knight-ErrantMTG Card: Elspeth, Knight-Errant vs her Duel Deck printing. By using a continuous game object, it's easier to understand (and remember) that Sorin's effect acts more like Glorious AnthemMTG Card: Glorious Anthem than say something like Break of DayMTG Card: Break of Day (which only effects creatures on the field at the time it resolves).

There is actually one way to clear an emblem from a player, but it's not easy: restarting the game with Karn LiberatedMTG Card: Karn Liberated. There's no entry in the Comprehensive Rules that explicitly states this, but it's made clear in the Oracle rulings for the card and in the New Phyrexia FAQ.

714.1 One card (Karn LiberatedMTG Card: Karn Liberated) restarts the game. A game that is restarted immediately ends. No players in that game win, lose, or draw that game. All players in that game when it ended then start a new game following the procedures set forth in rule 103, "Starting the Game," with the following exception:

714.1a The starting player in the new game is the player who controlled the spell or ability that restarted the game.

And as when any magic game begins, you don't get to "keep" anything from a previous game (With the obvious exception of 'What Karn has exiled').

I dont know I would have to look at emblems and Karn, because its restarting the game, not starting a new game.

This question was settled almost 3 years ago, and the relevant rules were quoted in the last post. Avoid bringing up very old threads unless you have something particularly significant to add to them ("I don't know" would be the exact opposite of that).

What about warp World?

An emblem isn't a permanent, and isn't on the battlefield. It's in the command zone. It won't be affected by Warp World. This question was settled a very long time ago.
