Can Planeswalkers be hexproof?

Asked by Sloanan 10 years ago

So this isn't really a deck help kind of thing since it's not for a particular deck I have, but I figured I'd put it in here since it could potentially help a deck I make in the future.

Let's say I have a Mycosynth Lattice out with a Leonin Abunas out as well, making my side of the board hexproof. Next turn I pull out, say, Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas . Due to the lattice, he's hexproof.

Now, I know that opponents can redirect damage (from a burn spell, for instance) over to a planeswalker. Would they be able to if he's technically a hexproof artifact? I know that making him hexproof would negate hard removal like Hero's Downfall , but I'm still on the fence about burn spells & the whatnot.

Any thoughts?

Eh, probably should've retitled this since it's not the right question, cuz I at least answered that part of it in my explanation.

Yes, you can give planeswalkers hexproof, usually with things that grant hexproof to permanents you control, a la Privileged Position or Simic Charm and as far as I know, redirecting damage doesn't target, so hexproof doesn't protect burn redirected to a PW you control.

when casting a burn spell, the spell targets the player. then damage can be redirected to the planeswalker. you aren't targeting the planeswalker, so the damage can still be redirected even if the planeswalker has hexproof.

however, if you had hexproof (via Aegis of the Gods or something), then no one can burn your planeswalker, because you, the player, can't be targeted.

Yeah, that's about what I thought, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the help, fellas.

Fated Conflagration says fuck the rules, and can't go through hexproof, because it DOES target the planeswalker. (This wasn't useful, but I said it anyway)

You should ask technical rules questions like this on the Q+A page in the header.
