Can I use Manifold Key to abuse something like Mishra's Bauble

Asked by kevin 2 years ago

Can I activate Manifold Key in response to the activation of Mishra's Bauble to untap it and activate it again before the sacrifice trigger?

No, sacrificing Mishra's Bauble is part of the cost, not of the effect. If the wording was ": Sacrifice Mishra's Bauble. Look at the top card of target player's library. Draw a card at the beginning of the next turn's upkeep." it would work.

Basically, every time you want to activate an ability, you need to perform every action before the colon (:). In this case, you need to both tap and sacrifice the Bauble to be able to use the ability. You would have to both untap and "un-sacrifice" the Bauble to use the effect more than once.

Triggered abilities are written with the words "when", "whenever", and "at". Activated abilities are written as "[cost]:[effect]".

When activating an ability, you must pay all costs (everything before the ":") in order to put the effect (everything after the ":") on the stack. Players cannot respond to you paying a cost, only to the effect going on the stack.

While it prevents this combo, it also works out in your favor a lot of the time. No one can respond to costs being paid, so if you announce that you're sacrificing a creature to, say, Bushmeat Poacher, the opponent can't exile the creature you're sacrificing to prevent you from gaining the life and drawing a card.
