Can I use Eldrazi Scion to play Hand of Emrakul?

Asked by zildjian88 9 years ago

[[hand of Emrakul's alternate casting method is very 'handy', but I'm wondering if I can still play with the new battle for zendikar style Eldrazi and have the same benefit, as in the new set the cards mostly, if not exclusively, summon 1/1 Eldrazi scion, not spawn. Does anyone know if there will be a reprint or is it limited to being played with Rise of the Eldrazi set effectively?

Please link cards in your answer. It makes answering your questions much easier.

Hand of Emrakul

Anyway, Hand of Emrakul specifically says "Eldrazi Spawn". That means that the creatures you sacrifice need to have both the subtype "Eldrazi" and the subtype "spawn" for it to work. Eldrazi Scions do not have the subtype Spawn (which has been substituted by the subtype Scion) and as such can't be sacrificed to Hand of Emrakul's ability.

One of the features of the "evolution" of Eldrazi Spawns into Eldrazi Scions is indeed that cards that care about one of the two interact only with it, and not the other. So you won't be able to sacrifice spawns as if they were scions, and the other way around. For example, you can't sacrifice spawns to Deathless Behemoth, either. That is just the way things are. They are not going to retroactively change old cards to interact with Scions, just in the same way that the new cards have not been printed to interact with spawns.

Notice that the ability cares about subtypes, not names. So, for example, if you control a Xenograft that has named "Spawn" as the relevant subtype, you will be able to sacrifice Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth to cast Hand of Emrakul as those creatures were already Eldrazis and gained the subtype Spawn, they are now "Eldrazi Spawn"s for the purpose of the ability on Hand of Emrakul.

In the same way, you can sacrifice four creatures with Changeling (like Taurean Mauler). Having all creature types also means you are both an Eldrazi and a Spawn.

The Q&A; is not the place to discuss reprints or possible design decisions. If you would like to have that portion of your question answered, please start a thread in the Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum.
