Can I kill Mairsil before her ETB effect triggers?

Asked by MizzMizz 5 years ago

My friend plays a pretty nasty Mairsil, the Pretender edh deck and once Mairsil is attached to something that allows it to bounce at will, it's pretty much game over. Something that i think i overlooked was that ETB triggers still go on the stack, right?

So i should be able to cast a Vindicate on Mairsil and kill her before her ETB effect grabs AEtherling allowing her to bounce, correct?

Yes, triggers go on the stack, including those that are triggered when something enters the battlefield. This will allow you to cast removal on Mairsil, as long as you do so while the trigger is still on the stack.

You can't use Vindicate without something to give it flash, though, as Vindicate is a sorcery. You'd need a Murder or something else instant-speed instead.

A few points concerning this interaction. Note that Mairsil, the Pretender 's second ability is a static ability and does not use the stack. So if there is already a caged AEtherling , Mairsil will have the blink ability. Abilities also exist independently of their source, so even if you Murder Mairsil they can still cage a card from hand or the graveyard to be used next time they cast it.

Gidgetimer thank you, yes I'm aware that if it's already attached, then I cant do much about it, I just wanted to make sure that I'm able to kill Mairsil when she comes down and goes to attach Aetherling to it.

So as a Mairsil main myself ill let you in on how to kill/really piss us off.... ima regret this. lol -Harsh Mentor- every time we try to use our commander we take 2 damage, & generally we don't add life-gain so its extra annoying. -Rift sweeper- It allows for you to put our caged things back in our deck, this is infuriating, if you learn what to target & are able to blind RS you can easily shut off the deck, i have a friend that plays a Meren deck where he sacs & reoccurs it, getting rid of my abilities as fast as they can be added -Get rid of the graveyard, A Mairsil player who knows what they're doing looks at the graveyard as basically the extension of the hand, and if you can cut off the fingers with some grave hate like Ground Seal, or a similar effect you effectively cripple them, and make it a lot harder for them to be able to cage items. -Finally watch for haste enablers, generally this is a sign that M is coming to the field in the next time and can be flickered fairly easily.
