Can I instantly mill with Grindstone + Painter's Servant?

Asked by CardTyrant 11 years ago

I have read on several sites that if Painter's Servant is on the field, and I use Grindstone , I will mill my enemy's deck out instantly. Also, what if my enemy has Emrakul, the Aeons Torn ?

Painter's Servant and Grindstone combine to form an infinite mill combo. So that part of your question is correct. Unfortunately, if your opponent has Emrakul, the Aeons Torn in his library, he essentially can't be milled (unless you can somehow manage to exile Emrakul and then mill him). Each time Emrakul would be milled, he instead shuffles the graveyard back into the library and your process would start over.

Emrakul's ability will trigger when it goes into the graveyard, but won't be able to interrupt the resolution of Grindstone's ability. So they'll mill until their deck is gone, making Grindstone stop, and then they'll shuffle everything back in. So it doesn't work the way you want it to without the addition of something like Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace

You can use something like Crypt Incursion to exile emrakul, in response to his trigger also. Which is, when emrakul hits the grave, his shuffle gy back to library triggers, you remove emrakul at that point, then move on, they shuffle, you continue mill till dead. While the harder play to get off, it's just another option, I suggest the void or RiP options.

@kmcree: It's important to note that Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 's ability technically does not work as you describe. Emrakul's ability is a triggered ability, so it happens after Grindstone 's ability resolves. "Instead" indicates a replacement effect, which is not relevant here.
