Can I copy a planeswalker and get starting loyalty?

Asked by TheLordStormCrow 8 years ago

So I want to make a token that's a copy of a planeswalker.

Will the token enter with loyalty equal to the amount that the planeswalker that I'm copying has (assuming it's different to the starting), or will it enter with the same amount that it would enter with if I just cast it from my hand?

It will enter with the Loyalty that is printed on the card, as though you cast the actual planeswalker from your hand. Counters (including loyalty) on permanents are not copiable values. So copying a Karn Liberated will have the copy enter with 6 loyalty counters.

My combo idea will work :)

Keep in mind that this is only for permanents that enter the battlefield as copies of planeswalkers. If you had a permanent that's already on the battlefield become a copy of a planeswalker, then the permanent would no get loyalty counters and be put into the graveyard as a state-based action.

For example: If your opponent used Gideon, Ally of Zendikar's +1 to turn it into a creature until end of turn, and then you cast Polymorphous Rush targeting your Elvish Mystic and choosing Gideon, then your Mystic would turn into a copy of Gideon (a Planeswalker Creature) with 0 loyalty and be put into your graveyard as soon as SBA's are checked (immediately).

This is why the origin flip-walkers exile themselves.

Remember, planeswalker uniqueness rule says you'll have to put all but one of the walker in the graveyard, so you'll effectively just be resetting the loyalty and getting a second activation.

Also, sonnet666, small note, but mystic will become a 0 loyalty planeswalker, nothing will be making it a creature. Though it's still supper dead so it doesn't change much.

Interestingly, if turn Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker into a creature with his +1 he won't be a walker, so if you copy him neither the planeswalker rule nor legend rule will apply until you either +1 the copy, or wait till end of turn for the animation to wear off.

Yeah, I know about the Planeswalker uniqueness thing, I just needed to know for a combo I wanted to make in modern, and I just need to use Saheeli Rai's -2 repeatedly to win :)
