Can I cast lands w/ Genesis Wave?
Asked by Snap157 7 years ago
I've got a deck that is pretty much only lands and mana dorks that gets insane ramp (20+ mana turn 6). With this being said, can I play land cards revealed with Genesis Wave?

Correct the card doesn't say you need to cast the permanents just to put the on to the battlefield.

To further expand, any card without a mana cost on the card has a Converted Mana Cost of 0. Lands are permanents, as Genesis Wave specifies, that have a Converted Mana Cost of 0, so you would be able to put them into play.

Small distinction though, you can't "play" any of the cards revealed by Genesis Wave, you only put them onto the battlefield. This means none of the lands will trigger Horn of Greed, though they will trigger landfall abilities like Retreat to Kazandu.

yeah, Neotrup is right. I used the phrase "put them into play" which is old lingo and a bit confusing. "onto the battlefield" had since replaced the term for exactly that reason.

Remember to check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question. Gatherer rulings include FAQs and other relevant clarifications that answer most questions typically asked about specific cards.
1/1/2011: If a card in your library has no mana symbols in its upper right corner (because it's a land card, for example), its converted mana cost is 0. Such cards can always be put onto the battlefield with Genesis Wave.
To address something in the title of the questions, lands are not cast. They can't be cast. Genesis Wave can put lands onto the battlefield because it does just that: it puts them onto the field without trying to cast them.

From gatherer "A permanent card is an artifact, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker card."
Genesis Wave does tell you to put the permanent cards into play.
