Can counters be annihilated due to the Annihilator ability?

This may have been asked before but my friends and I keep getting into arguments over this.

By counters, I assume you mean +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters.
No. Annihilator causes the defending player to sacrifice permanents. A permanent is any card or token on the battlefield. A counter is not a permanent.

As Greatsword said, a permanent is a card or token on the battlefield. Many players use the terms "counter" and "token" interchangeably, even though they are really completely different things in the game, which can lead to significant confusion. A token, such as the solider created by Attended Knight or the Satyr created by Xenagos, The Reveler , is a permanent which can be sacrificed to the annihilator ability of a card such as Ulamog's Crusher . A counter, such as those created by the evolve ability of Gyre Sage or the heroic ability of Fabled Hero , are markers that go on a permanent, card, or player to represent something (most often +1/+1). Such counters are not permanents, they are on permanents.

An annihilator trigger makes you sacrifice permanents. A permanent is a card or token on the battlefield. A counter is just a marker on a permanent; it isn't an object on the battlefield unto itself. You can't sacrifice a counter for an annihilator ability.
