Can a detained creature crew a vehicle?

Asked by lil_cheez 6 years ago

So, this may sound a little weird, but my friends play with thematic decks and we stucked with this question.

Azorius player used a Martial Law to detain a Gearshift Ace, then attacked with a flying creature.
Vehicles player then used the Ace and some other creature to crew a Heart of Kiran, being able to block, but then the Azorius player came with that question, "the Ace can crew while being detained?"

We figured that yes it can crew, because crew is an ability of the vehicle not the creature, but I would like to be sure.

Also, no jokes about the detained creature being without a driver's license please, I've heard that a lot already lol

He absolutely can still pilot a vehicle. Like you had guessed, Crew is an activated ability of the vehicle itself, the Gearshift Ace is just being tapped as part of that ability. Think of it this way: if the vehicle weren't in play, would Gearshift Ace have Crew 3? Certainly not.

Thus, if your opponent were to drop a Stony Silence, you could of course still attack or block with Gearshift Ace, but the Heart of Kiran would no longer be pilotable. That said, a Fleetwheel Cruiser, or any vehicle enchanted with Aerial Modification, would still be able to attack since they're creatures without needing their activated ability.

It's weird, yes, given the flavor of Detain, but as mentioned, still allowed.

Kind of like tapping a wizard with summoning sickness for Azami, Lady of Scrolls's ability, including Azami herself. Not entirely intuitive, but allowed.

Fine, I won't make any drivers license jokes. :D

Here are the rules of Crewing: 702.121. Crew
702.121a Crew is an activated ability of Vehicle cards. “Crew N” means “Tap any number of untapped creatures you control with total power N or greater: This permanent becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.”
702.121b A creature “crews a Vehicle” when it’s tapped to pay the cost to activate a Vehicle’s crew ability.
702.121c If an effect states that a creature “can’t crew Vehicles,” that creature can’t be tapped to pay the crew cost of a Vehicle.
According to 702.121a, "Crew is an activated ability of Vehicle cards." So, as has been said before, crewing is not an ability of the Gearshift Ace and is an activated ability of Heart of Kiran.

Hope this further answers your questions.
