Can a card played with Quicksilver Amulet be countered?

If I were to use Quicksilver Amulet's ability to put Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre onto the battlefield, could my opponent counter with Cancel? Would I still get Ulamog's "when cast" ability?

Cancel and similar cards can only counter spells. In your example you're using the ability of Quicksilver Amulet to put Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre directly onto the battlefield. Ulamog isn't being cast as a spell, meaning it can't be countered and doesn't trigger its "when you cast" ability.
