Banisher Priest a Comboing Substitute for Fiend Hunter?
Asked by Ragdoll 11 years ago
During the m14 games day, all those many weeks ago when Innistrad was still legal (sniff), a guy absolutely demolished me with the following combo:
He first got out Undercity Informer along with Burning-Tree Emissary .
Next he played Fiend Hunter , exiling the emissary.
He then milled Angel of Glory's Rise into his graveyard, along with another FH.
He unburiel-rightsed the angel, exiling the angel with the newly returned FH.
He used the informer to sac the FHs, using the emissary's mana and the angel's ETB to get the fiend hunters back and repeat.
My question is whether or not Banisher Priest would work for this combo, what with the different wording and all.

It doesn't look like it seeing as Banisher Priest targets a creature an opponent controls where in this case he exiled a creature he controls with Fiend Hunter

It would work because the combo does not rely on the Fiend Hunter /Banisher Priest component having an LTB ability.
The difference between Banisher Priest and Fiend Hunter is that the former returns the exiled card to the battlefield immediately upon Banisher Priest leaving the battlefield while the latter retuns the exiled card through a triggered ability that triggers when Fiend Hunter leaves the battlefield.
In this case, it's irrelevant whether the exiled card is returned through an effect wearing off or through a triggered ability resolving. All that matters for this combo is that the exiled card is returned.

Actually, golffore297 is correct. I completely overlooked that Banisher Priest only targets creatures opponents control. You can't combo with your own creatures using that effect.
