Arc Trail putting multiple counters on Quest for Pure Flame

Asked by Femme_Fatale 11 years ago

When I cast Arc Trail and have Quest for Pure Flame on the field, does it put 2 counters on it or one? If so does the same apply to other cards with the same limited number of targets, as well as things like Pyroclasm , where it would put a counter on Quest for Pure Flame for each creature dealt damage?

Arc Trail will put two counters on the Quest. Pyroclasm will put one.

The card deals damage once for each instance of the word 'damage' on the card. "5 damage to all creatures" is 1 instance of dealing damage. "Two damage to one creature and two damage to another creature" is 2 instances of dealing damage.

Two counters. Basically every separate set of "damage" dealt by a source will individually activate the quest.

Pyroclasm, however, only activates quest once - there is only one set of "damage" which is dealt to all creatures.

The usual trick is to look for the number of times that the word "damage" actually appears - that's how many times the source deals damage.

Just pointing out that Quest for Pure Flame only gets a counter for damage to an opponent, not creatures. So, you would need to be in a 3 player game for Arc Trail to be able to trigger Quest for Pure Flame twice. Similarly, you are most likely unable to get a counter from Pyroclasm ("2 damage to each creature). Though damage redirection might still make it possible.

Then for things like Fireball where you get to choose the number of targets you are dealing damage to, Quest for Pure Flame gets that many counters on it?

@ Arachnarchist

You are wrong about that, there are two different wordings, player and opponent. Opponent is anything on the opponents field. Player is to the person directly.

@Femme_Fatale

No that is absolutely wrong. Dealing damage to something an opponent controls is NOT dealing it to an opponent.

Things say "Player" and "Opponent" to separate whether they can be targeted to yourself and allies, or only opponents. But "Opponent" is still "A player that is neither yourself nor a teammate" and not anything they control.

My apologies then, I was wrong.

Thank you, my questions have been answered for today.

Femme_Fatale, the difference between player and opponent is that an opponent means "not the player who controls the source." For example, if Quest for Pure Flame said player, then it would trigger for any time a source you control did damage to you. But since it says "opponent", you don't count.

It's just confusing, as gatherer states that any kind of damage would proc both abilities.
