Why no essence scatter?

I'm sure most of you know that Jeremy Dezani won pro tour theros. Obviously the deck he made was good enough to win but why did he use negate over essence scatter. I feel like it was a really creature heavy tournament and there were limited targets for negate. The only thing I can think of is if it's there for removal heavy decks such as Esper with board wipes and the like. (I litterally just thought of that as I'm writing this) any thoughts? Would replacing negate with essence scatter be more or less beneficial?

I don't know what his deck was, but consider what other answers he had. Perhaps he didn't think Essence Scatter was necessary because he has other ways to deal with creatures (removal spells, better creatures) while Negate gave him an answer to things he couldn't otherwise deal with.

Wall of Frost was his answer to creature heavy decks. It cast for a single U more than Essence Scatter , adds to devotion, is infinitely more flexible since you can effectively keep two creatures locked down with it, lets you tap out each turn so that you don't have to keep counter mana up, and can be cast against little creatures without worrying that you wasted something that could have been used against a bigger one. Add to this that he was running two Cyclonic Rift and one Disperse main board and I would have questioned his sanity if he didn't have an answer for non-creature spells in the side board.

Also, Essence Scatter can't counter Elspeth, Sun's Champion . Negate can.
