Can't Choose: Oran-Rief Hydra vs Ulvenwald Hydra

Standard Deck Help forum

As I was updating my deck and was considering replacing Oran-Rief Hydra with Ulvenwald Hydra but I can't tell witch one is stronger for it. Both have there ups and downs but I just can't choose what one would be a stronger impact. My deck is Land Manipulation (SOI Post Rotation & Current). Any and all help is appreciated.

I honestly would go with Oran-Rief Hydra. Depending on the situation it can be bigger, or it can be smaller. I do believe that on a creature that grows big, Trample is much more important than Reach, as Trample allows you to get damage through.

The_Riddlebox That's what I was thinking but I have faced multiple decks with flyers like Avaricious Dragon that have hit me hard because I didn't have Dragonmaster Outcast or removal like Plummet was on my sideboard so it would be nice to have a answer for flying but at sure high drop and such power it seems like a waste to keep Ulvenwald Hydra as a blocker then again Arlinn Kord can give it vigilance. I like both of them its just hard to say with one is right.

You can try a split if you really need it. I do feel like you should have your deck geared towards what will net you the most advantage most of the times, it does suck when you lose game one and think to yourself "Man if that card in the sideboard was in the mainboard instead I would have won!" but normally if that's the only reason why you lost you are likely to win game 2 and 3.

I feel like Oran-Rief Hydra will get more damage through more often than not, than Ulvenwald Hydra will. I haven't look at your deck, sorry, so I am just assuming things here. Let's say you are running 3 Oran-Rief Hydras, you can always split 2 Oran-Riefs and 1 Ulvenwald; something like that, if you are really indecisive. I feel like that between Plummet and Clip Wings you should have plenty of removal available for fliers.

The_Riddlebox I was thinking about what you said and agreed that Oran-Rief Hydra is the better choice mainly because in games I can get it so strong it can trample of eldrazi titans but flying is too big of a problem for this deck so I'm going to try cycling out Terra Stomper because the lack of control and good counter spells in standard right now and throw in Ulvenwald Hydra to replace it for more answers. Thanks for the help!

Honestly, if you wanted a major threat that screw over control Gaea's Revenge is much better than Terra Stomper.

@The_Riddlebox, control isn't a problem "YET" so I'm not to worried and Gaea's Revenge ruins my curve and delay Omnath, Locus of Rage.
