This is no secret, but for a new player unfamiliar with cards that aren't rare/mythic and still great to have.

In modern I have been playing this alot, and I will say that for $0.24, i think it is one of the most impressive instakill cards there are. not only does it handle very large creatures, it handles the indestructibles, making this a very valuable card to me. When used with others like Go for the Throat, it's unreal.

Tragic Slip

It's certainly not a bad card. Still handles x/1s like bop and pretty much any elf that isn't a lord.

for $.75 more, Dismember is frankly better. Most relevant modern creatures die to it, and it CAN be cast 1. Tragic Slip is OK, but the morbid requirement is too restrictive, Imo.

The issue with Tragic Slip is that it is only good against creature heavy match-ups, and you typically want mass removal rather than targeted removal against those. If you are just using it to kill weenies, why not just Darkblast and get the repeatability out of it?

I still love the card, but getting it Morbid can be tough without the right shell.

Both Tragic Slip and Darkblast are great IMO

Tragic Slip can kill more things for 1 mana than Dismember or Lightning Bolt can, but the other two have such a high utility outside of that it's hard to compare them. If you could consistently get Morbid online, then I would play Tragic Slip.

Also, it's not like Lightning Bolt is that expensive. It's been reprinted into oblivion. But, if you aren't playing Red, then sure you can try Tragic Slip.

Tragic Slip and Geth's Verdict makeup the majority of my targeted removal in my mono-black pauper deck. It rocks !

Tragic Slip is supposed to be played in dedicated sacrifice decks (you know, aristocrats and stuff), where it becomes the best kilspell you could ever ask for, and a mandatory 4-of. In other decks, it's still good (especially in response to the enemy killing one of your dudes with their own removal), but a bit too restricted in its usage.

The thing is ive mainly been using it in a b/r weenie deck and it's done very well- id recommend sideboarding it in the event you end up playing a deck that uses few creatures.

Black is my go to, and with that said, im very familiar with all of the removal spells. Dismember is by far one of the best, but i still almost prefer Tragic Slip when I know something is going to give me the morbid effect. I wouldnt recommend it for a demon deck, but great in a zombie sac type, or weenie like ive been. Starting to really love it
