I'm trying to figure out just how many deck types are in current standard, that being from Zendikar - Innistrad plus M11 and M12. If some people could help me out that'd be great.

Actually, current Standard is Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, Magic 2012 Core Set, and Innistrad... and this rotation has been rather great because we now have no FOR SURE working decks, that we are positive work... for example... Tempered Steel is making a comeback despite it's losses... we will always have U/W Control and U/B Control... mono red is now really viable... illusions is great, a mono green dungrove deck is great, flashback decks can work, graveyard decks, mill decks, and the best part... ABSOLUTELY NO COMBO WINS :)Mono white may make a comeback, W/B could work, we will have a mix of three color decks, pod decks.... so if you get my point by now, there are tons of decks which means people like me who like using homebrews and not the most popular winning deck, you are in luck : )

actually there is one combo win just no clue how consistant it is using Mirror-Mad Phantasm , Necrotic Ooze , Laboratory Maniac , and then Surgical Extraction away your phantasm to infinate mill your deck during your upkeep.

Malekor is right that Zendikar block and M11 aren't standard anymore (or rather, won't be as of this coming friday). He's also right that many of the crazy winning decks have been done away with. With Zendikar's rotation we see the end of CawBlade, Valakut, and Splinter Twin. It'll take a while for Tempered Steel to get back on its feet, etc.

He's not right that there won't be a whole new crop of these types of "most popular winning decks", "pro decks", or "net decks" eventually. You will have a better than usual shot with your homebrews for the next few weeks at least though. Good luck and cross your fingers that you're the one that finds the next crazy deck.

Actually caw-blade technically isn't dead it's just going to use Invisible Stalker as the heir to the squadron hawk throne even though it won't be called caw-blade it's still gonna be their. Also pod decks will probably be the most dominate deck in the new standard IMO but it really depends on what new decks will get spawned from innistrad i mean who knows we could possibly see a dominate werewolf deck in the future while that probably won't happen you never know what people will come up with

@digikid

Invisible Stalker doesn't replace the Hawks for two reasons.

  1. It limits the possible colors for that deck further (it's not white) so if you want the quality white removal in the deck you're stuck as a w/u deck.
  2. It has no search function to dig for more stalkers the way the hawks did. Sure. People will try it. No, it won't work as well.
And you're right, Pod decks have already begun being talked about seriously but there's room for something to come along and beat them for sure.

@burnsbabe I agree that the stalker won't replace the squadron hawk in terms of the pure card advantage it gave players but he will be a great sword carrier because of him being unblockable and also having hex proof. Honestly nothing will replace the hawk completely but the stalker will do it's absolute best.

@digikid

Agreed. I think you'd need several different hexproof or unblockable creatures in a deck to make up for the hawks since you could dig them out so easily. Believe me, I think the Invisible Stalker is pretty excellent. Actually, I've got a sacrifice deck in beta right now with him and Wreath of Geists . It's gonna be great.

I think Geist of Saint Traft will be another great sword target because that card will be ridiculous in blue-white he is awesome
