Abusing Layers

Deck Help forum

Hello,

Recently I learned how layers work to be able to play my Humility better, I have come across some pretty busted combos that work because of layering. Such as Nissa, Vital Force making its creature a 5/5 even with humility in play because it's effect works on layers before humility. Are there any other notable combos like this? With or without humility. Please take the EDH ban list into consideration.

Thanks, Sme4

Magus of the Moon . It’s affect operates on a different level. As a result, Humility does not affect it. It is an ongoing joke in my meta where we believe that if you attach Humility and Blood Moon affect on a legendary creature, you solve the red white being competitive problem.

AKBZ I am not so sure that works the way you think it does. "Nonbasic lands are mountains" is a static ability of magus of the moon, and creatures lose all abilities so that static ability is no longer in effect.

TypicalTimmy The ability of Nissa, Vital Force would have a more recent Timestamp then that of Humility if you used the ability after Humility entered play. Humility will remove the ability to tap from the creature lands but they will still have haste. Nissa applies in Layer 4, then continues to apply in timestamp order in Layer 6, then in Layer 7b. That is why the land remains a 5/5.

GhostChieftain But Humility Removes the ability of Magus of the Moon in layer 7b. Magus works in Layer 4. Even through Magus will lose the ability when Static effects are checked, the ability still works in Layer 4 and is applied there. This is why creatures that copy other things such as Clone are still able to remain a copy of things during an active Humility, since they work in Layer 1.

GhostChieftain My bad, Humility removes the effect in Layer 6, Not Layer 7b
