what is in a EDH deck, how many cards are in it, what is in it, and is their a special thing to it?

EDH is its own format of Magic the Gathering. Its official rules can be found here: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php (copy and paste because I don't know how to work links here).

99 cards and a Commander (who has to be a legendary creature). Specific limitations on colors allowed in the deck based on said Commander.

Depends on the Commander. If your commander is Kami of the Crescent Moon , all you'll be allowed to run are blue and colorless cards (and this doesn't include things like Gold Myr , which has a W mana symbol in its rules text; color identity is explained at the site I linked to). The Mimeoplasm can't run red or white cards, but is allowed everything else. Karn, Silver Golem can't run ANY colored cards, or cards with colored symbols in their rules text.

so it is according to your commander, ok so only 1 commander, anything else

Only 1 copy of anything that ain't basic lands. There's a banlist. Eternal format; so all old cards and all new cards that aren't banned are allowed.

I'm just going to move this to the EDH forum because it isn't yet about a specific deck.

patrickloyd says... #11

some one told me you could only have 10 uncommon, is that true

No. As people have already mentioned, in EDH you're only allowed one copy but there are no other restrictions. There is however a banlist.

As your commander is Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis , then your deck is only allowed to use black cards.

That's it.... you then just make a deck.

Unless there is a special rule in your playgroup, any number of any rarity is allowed.

I wouldn't recommend a mono-color commander for your first deck, and certainly not Nefarox, who is substandard, as his mechanic is not heavily supported in his color, and does not particularly lend himself to any other strategy.

November 7, 2013 7:32 p.m.

patrickloyd says... #16

ok so i guess i get most of it but how do you win?

November 7, 2013 7:34 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #17

Land is included in the 99. You have somewhere from 33 to 40. Roughly.

He won't be a good commander.

You want a commander that has an interesting ability that the entire deck can profit from. It's easier to think of EDH decks as themed decks where every cards helps towards one goal.

You win through damage, like in a normal game but each player starts on 40 life. Or you can also win by doing 21 damage with your commander to another player.

raithe000 says... #19

Land is included in the 99 cards, and the recommended level is 37-40, although it varies based on deck.

To answer your question about winning, each player starts with 30 life and can lose in anyway you lose in regular magic (0 life, can't draw a card, 10 poison, specials like Azor's Elocutors ) and by taking 21 damage from the same commander.

It's a fun format. I encourage you to give it a go. The ban list is a very short one. So, if you've got a card you like, you are very likely to be able to play it. None of that rotation crap.

A lot of commander decks get posted here so, once you've got a starting deck list post it. The community will help you sort it out.

It might be helpful, after you've read the rules, to see a decklist, so here's my self-centered action of the day:

Nothing like a lady with a buzzsaw

Win conditions would be:

1.) Dealing lethal damage. Each player starts at 40 life.

2.) Milling the other players (Not recommended, really hard plus people like to run Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre )

3.) Infect still works if you don't want to have friends.

4.) Any card that says, "You win the game if..."

5.) Infinite Combos. (Also not highly recommended since they cause frowny faces)
