Lets start a riot is my commander deck my commander is Rakdos, Lord of Riots I am wondering how he works with Hangarback Walker does it reduce both X or just one or does it reduce it by an even amount IE if I deal 6 damage with rakdos would hangarback walker come in with 6 +1/+1, 3 +1/+1 or would it be 6 +1/+1 but I would have to pay 6 mana for the second X cost?

In that example you could cast hangarback with x=3 for free. 3+3 not 6+6

How X spells work:

  1. Announce the value for X. In this case lets say X=3.
  2. Play the spell/ability paying the appropriate mana:
  3. For each X in the cost, you must pay what you announced. Astral Cornucopia with the above conditions will cost mana total, while a Hangarback Walker will cost , while Condescend will cost .
  4. Calculate any reductions and increases on that mana cost. For example, if you have a Rakdos, Lord of Riots and your opponent was dealt 6 damage, Hangarback Walker will cost mana less or 0 in this case. However, if your opponent had a Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, it will cost .
  5. ???
  6. Profit!
