For the name, would "Time Capsule" work?

@ M a g i c a l H a c k e r, I'm not so sure, it's a good name, but shelf has 1 syllable so it rolls off the tongue easier.

It does, but it's not intuitive AT ALL. I saw the name and thought it was a vague/bland name, unless you have like a shelf zone that cards go over other cards or something complex like that. Whereas "time capsule" (same number of syllables as "legacy") can explain 99% of the format.

M a g i c a l H a c k e r I see where ur coming from, but time capsule seems a bit complex. Shelf is simple. I can personally see myself saying "Hey you wanna play shelf?" Over "Hey you wanna play time capsule?" I understand that it explains the format more accurately, but that isn't what I think a title should be. Does modern or standard explain what their formats are? No. But they're short and catchy.

Thank you for your suggestion, and if you have any advice about a new name or some thoughts about banned cards or anything else, please put it in the comments. Thanks!

Elder dragon highlander is not short name, so you can abbreviate it to TC like how they did. And for the names of the other formats, standard was the standard format for FNMs and modern is all modern framed cards. So descriptive names seem to be the norm. I will say there's probably a better name than time capsule, but it's better than shelf.

I'm not saying Time Capsule is a bad name, it is actually pretty good. But I want a concise name, and I like shelf.

Again, if you have any other suggestions for names, or ideas about anything else please it in the comments. Thanks!

I do see where ur coming from and I'm liking TC more and more, but it is still shelf. If enough people like Time Capsule more then I will consider it.

Cool idea! Fun place to start is decks in Modern that didn't gain/lose too much like Splinter Twin and U/B Faeries. Those decks seem very scary in this meta.

It's also fun how everyone gets to play in the strongest Standards, where two full blocks and two core sets are available to play with. This is especially cool since Wizards like to put a few cards into core sets that really make the deck from the previous year stand out - Goblin Grenade to go with Goblin Guide, Rancor for infect, Talrand & Quirion Dryad for delver & Gitaxian Probe, slivers in 2014 & 15, and Starfield of Nyx/Shorecrasher Elemental for Theros.

so its just like modern, except 75% of the decks cant keep up.
so its just like modern.

on a supremely less cynical side, this sounds fun!
i had a little circle of people that played a format where your deck could use 3 blocks of your choice (like build your own standard, kind of)
and i feel like your format has the same kind of implied restrictions,
or else itd be all cawblades and oldschool affinity and whatever other decks forced the banhammer

Interesting idea.

Reminds me of when Gauntlet of Greatest did a toruney of the greatest standard decks of their time

I'm glad the name is working out for you guys! I remember seeing this last spring and loving the idea, but it kind of dropped off the radar for a while. I am glad to see you guys are gaining some traction. I am thinking about doing a return to ravnica standard deck. What do you think I should do for the block, go forward or backwards? :D

I really like this idea, also. If only just to gauge the "power-level" of all the past "Standards." +1ed and added to a folder.

Now, if I may toss in my two-cents-worth on the op-decks-banlist discussion, I think everybody has some valid concerns so far, but nobody can truly know for sure until playtesting is done. I'm not trying to boss anyone around, but I think those of you with concerns about power-levels should go do some playtesting, record the data from the games (such as cards played and on what turns, what actions were taken, wins/losses, wtc. ...you know, take notes as if you were studying for a test in school), and report back the results, PROVING that a ban or restriction of some sort is warranted. Even the previous Standard banlists should be playtested and reinforced, but play those banned cards against other banned cards from other Standards, and also against non-banned cards. Perhaps we'll find that certain cards no longer need to be banned in this format.

I'm sure we'll see eventually that a particular block-core set pairing is more powerful than all others, and we can probably guess which ones, according to how they functioned individually in the past. However, now the best standard deck-archetypes of all time will be facing-off against each other, not worse decks in their own pool of cards. This will then force those deck archetypes to evolve in order to adapt to a wider range of opponents, but still only using the same, limited pool of resources/cards.

Anyway, I like this idea a lot. The rules for it are easily explained. Card pools can be easily recognized. Decks for it can be quickly built and brewed. Plus, now you can actually use your Standard decks after blocks rotate out--instead of decided whether or not to alter your deck or invest more money in it by taking it Modern, now you can keep it as is and go find new challenges for it to face.

Finally, I gotta say, I like the name "Shelf" for the format. It's just explanatory enough that it kinda does describe the format in a single syllable, but it is also very flavorful, adding to its applicability.

Wow I just looked at this, like, 5 hours ago and it had 20 less upvotes!!

So glad to see you guys like the idea and r doing some testing.

wolfging so happy to see ur back on the comment board. Yea I dropped magic for a bit but I'm thinking of coming back to it a bit.

Seems like most of you like shelf as of now which is cool.

Just want to emphasis that I am by no means an expert on anything magic. I just like the game, so don't be annoyed if I don't get in on any of the convos about testing and power levels and such.

Wow, this format looks amazing.Still, it seems your publicity could be expanded.Maybe if you got into contact with one of the famous mtg youtubers like ManaSource or Tolarian community college they might be able to help you spread the word of this epic format and actually make it a thing.

I suggest the name Time Distortion due to the fact any different sets can be played like they are in standard.
