Zada/Ink-Trader Nephilim questions

Asked by ScareJester 6 years ago

First time forum poster and not sure if this is the right one, but hey. We all make mistakes.

So I'm in the process of rounding out my challenge of "commanders in all colours and combos", with only 3 four colours decks left: non-red (probably cycle), non-green (no idea yet) and non-black (radiate).

After I've hit a snag with "Heroic doesn't count with Zada/Ink-Trader", I'm in need of reworking the deck. So my question is: if I cast a spell targeting Zada/Ink-Trader, then copy the spell and target either of them again, does that count as "two spells, one target" or "two spells, two targets" or "one spell, two targets". Because if it is the first or second one, I suddenly can retool the deck. If it's the third one, I'll get a headache and shelve this deck for now until I'm over my cold.

First things first, if you're going to ask a question regarding particular cards, It's always best to reference them properly. E.g. Zada, Hedron Grinder, Ink-Treader Nephilim. As you said, first time posting so that's all good.

As for the question, I'm struggling a bit to understand what you're asking so I will explain what happens and hopefully that will help you answer your question.

You cast your first spell, targeting either. This then copies it for all other legal targets. If you then copy that spell, you don't recast the copy, you merely put a copy of it on the stack. This means that any abilities that trigger off "when you cast a spell targeting" won't trigger.

Both cards specifically check that you "cast and target them" so copied spells are not casted

ok so if you are asking about the interaction of the Heroic ability with Zada, Hedron Grinder and Ink-Treader Nephilim:

  • you cast a spell, say Brute Force targeting Zada, Hedron Grinder
  • zada's ability triggers and goes on the stack.
  • you then, in response, copy the first spell using Reverberate
  • since the copy generated by Reverberate is not CAST and is instead put directly onto the stack, so it doesn't trigger Zada, Hedron Grinder's ability
  • the copy of Brute Force resolves, giving zada +3/+3
  • zada's triggered ability resolves, putting a copy of Brute Force on the stack for each of your other creatures, and each copy targets a different one of those creatures.
  • the copies generated by zada resolve, pumping your team (except zada) by +3/+3
  • the original Brute Force resolves, giving zada +3/+3

NOTE: NO HEROIC ABILITY EVER TRIGGERS. you never CAST the Brute Forces that targeted your team, except for the original one that only targets Zada, Hedron Grinder. the reminder text for heroic states, "Whenever you cast a spell that targets (creature name), (effect). Because you don't cast the copies, the ability never triggers, so it is practically irrelevant in the scenario.

VraskaTheCursed : I already mentioned "Heroic doesn't trigger Zada/Ink-Trader", which was the reason for the retooling of my deck.

griffstick & enpc : Thanks! That was the answer I was looking for. Now to rethink how I want my radiate deck to work.
