Understanding Phasing?

Asked by WhiteWeasel 6 years ago

Vanishing Was recommended to me for my budget voltron deck. I've read up on the rules and the gist is at the beginning of my turn before I do anything, things that are phased out phase in and vice versa. Things that are phased out can't be interacted or interact with things that don't specifically affect phasing until they are phased in. It also does not technically change zones so +1/+1 counters remain and any things attached to the creature phase with it.

So the point of this is put it on my guy, and phase him out when they are in danger, or just prior to my turn beginning, and have them phase back in when it comes to my turn, right? How does that work when responding to an opponent or something at instant speed?

Just checked up on the rulings for this card, and the phasing happens at instant speed, and you can phase out while your opponent is attacking you.

Yup, you can activate Vanishing at instant speed, phasing the creature out in response to kill spells, after being declared a blocker, after being blocked, etc. and it will phase back in at the beginning of your turn. Things only phase out at the beginning if they have Phasing. Vanishing doesn't give phasing, it just manually phases the creature out at instant speed.

Additionally, anything attached to a permanent when it phases out phase out with it. So Vanishing itself will phase out with the creature, and phase back in with the creature, still attached.

To answer the last bit, phasing out at instant speed will work a lot like blinking or exiling at instant speed. If your opponent casts Terminate targeting your creature that has Vanishing on it, you can activate Vanishing while Terminate is on the stack, phasing the creature out, then when Terminate goes to resolve, it will fizzle because it has no target.

Even better, if you have enough open, and someone targets the enchanted creature with a kill spell, you activate phasing, then they respond to your phasing with another kill spell (or a Disallow) you can pay the again and phase out. (all at instant speed!)

Wow, that's just... holy crap that's good for a ~20 cent card. No wonder the guy told me it's scary when paired with Zur the Enchanter or whatever other meta voltron commander. Then it's settled, Vanishing is definitely on my wish list!
