Soul Warden/pridemate question

Asked by Kepy123 7 years ago

If I have Soul Warden and Mentor of the Meek in play and cast Ajani's Pridemate. Will I be able to pay the 1 colorless and draw a card or will my Ajani's Pridemate turn into a 3/3 first ? Not

From the Gatherer page for Mentor of the Meek:

"You only check the power of the other creature when it enters the battlefield. --If it's 2 or less, the ability will trigger. Once the ability triggers, raising that creature's power above 2 won't affect that ability. --Similarly, reducing the creature's power to 2 or less after it enters the battlefield won't cause the ability to trigger."

The Pridemate is a 2/2 when it enters the battlefield, so the Mentor will trigger and you can pay to draw a card.

If you had an Honor of the Pure on the battlefield however, it would not work. It is only because there is a triggered ability of Soul Warden (and you can stack them in the right order).

Bovine073, you're correct about Honor of the Pure because it has a static ability that doesn't use the stack, which means the Pridemate enters the battlefield as a 3/3 and so doesn't trigger the Mentor, but the order that you stack the triggered abilities in the Soul Warden scenario is irrelevant. Once the Mentor has been triggered, changing the Pridemate's power doesn't affect the Mentor's ability, so the order of resolution doesn't matter.

Ah right, my bad. I was reading it in my head as "Whenever another creature etbs, if it is power 2 or less...".

Thanks for the catch Lame_Duck.
