Sidisi Brood Tyrant/Undead Vizer in EDH rules

Asked by msmahaj722 5 years ago

Alright so I know there is a new legendary rule, and I’m posting this to get a definitive answer once and for all.

My commander,Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, is in play. I play Sidisi, Undead Vizer. Does one of them get sacrificed since they’re both Sidisi cards?

Same applies to two different Lilianas, two different Jace’s, etc.

Also where can I find the text of this rule definitively? I’ve searched online and I can only find the OLD legend rule. I need whatever the updated one is. Thank you.

The comprehensive rules are the place to find all the rules of magic. The last time the legend rule was changed was when Theros released. The most recent change was that there is no longer a separate rule for Planeswalkers. They are now legendary cards and subject to the legend rule. As long as the card names are not the same it doesn't matter if the cards depict the same character.

704.5j If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “legend rule.”

As Gidgetimer has said, the Legend Rule would have never prevented you from having both Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Sidisi, Undead Vizier on the battlefield at the same time, since they have different names. The only thing the recent change does is simplify the rules for planeswalkers, which incidentally now lets you have Jace Beleren, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, and Jace, Architect of Thought all on the battlefield at once, where previously planeswalkers were only allowed to have one of each planeswalker type (Jace, Gideon, Elspeth, etc.) on the board at any given time.

Oh, and the reason you're only finding the old legend rule is because as mentioned, it didn't change.

What changed was the Planeswalker uniqueness rule, which was abandoned in Ixalan, and all planeswalkers gained the supertype "legendary" so that the legend rule would apply to them.
