React with Deathrite Shaman on Putrid Imps ability

Asked by Kyusss 8 years ago

Lets say I control a Purtrid Imp plus one more creature and I have a Scourge of Nel Toth in my hand. My opponent controls a Deathrite Shaman and a untapped forest. Can I use Putrid Imps ability to discard the Dragon and immediately cast it from my graveyard without my oponent having the chance to exile it with his shaman?

Link all cards in your question.
Putrid Imp
Scourge of Nel Toth
Deathrite Shaman

No. The cost to activate Putrid Imp's ability is to discard a card. Therefore, Scourge of Nel Toth will be in your graveyard when you activate the ability, but the ability itself will still be on the stack and will prevent you from casting Scourge of Nel Toth immediately. Your opponent can respond to Putrid Imp's ability by activating Deathrite Shaman's ability.

Note that a player may hold priority upon casting a spell, activating an ability, or taking a special action.

The timing restriction for Scourge of Nel Toth is what stops this from working for you. Casting a creature spell is done at sorcery speed, meaning the stack must be empty, must be your main phase, and must have priority. You won't get the chance to cast it before it's exiled via Deathrite Shaman's ability.

However, if you have a card or effect that grants flash (i.e. Vedalken Orrery), you may hold priority upon activating Putrid Imp's ability. Since discarding a card is part of the cost, Scourge of Nel Toth will be in your graveyard already. And you may flash it in from the graveyard in response to your own activated ability.
