protection from blue sources

Asked by VexxValentine 8 years ago

if i were to block a blue creature with a Goblin Piledriver would it take damage from that blue creature or would the damage be prevented since the damage is coming from a blue source

Damage would be prevented.

A handy way to remember how protection works is DEBT.

A creature with protection from something can't be:

D- Damaged by
E- Enchanted/Equipped with
B- Blocked by
T- Targeted by

things that have that property. So Goblin Piledriver can't take damage from blue sources, be enchanted or equipped with blue auras/equipment, blocked by blue creatures, or targeted by blue spells or abilities.

The damage would be prevented. Protection stops Damage, enchanting, equipping, fortifying, blocking, and targeting from any source of the protection type (in this case, a blue creature).

I really hope that you don't have an Origins copy of Piledriver. That particular copy (the one shown when you link as a matter of fact) says right on it "this creature can't be ... dealt damage ... by anything blue".

The bluie creature would try to deal damage to the goblin. That damage would be prevented by the protection.

Also note, that if the blue creature has trample, then it would try to deal 2 damage to the goblin, and the rest to you. This is due to the way trample is figured: trample looks to see if enough damage is dealt to the creature to kill it, it doesn't care if that damage to the creature was prevented.

Also note, is that protection prevents damage. So in rare circumstances you may have a creature with protection, and someone has played a card that states damage cannot be prevented. So in these circumstances protection fails to protect the creature. Malignus is one creature with a static ability that gets around protection.

Lol @ Gidgetimer's astuteness. The card itself has the best answer here.
