Priority with Sorin, Solemn Visitor Emblem and Palace Siege

Asked by Argy 8 years ago

If I have Palace Siege on the field and my Opponent has the Emblem for Sorin, Solemn Visitor out, which happens first: the discard or returning the Creature to my hand?

I assume you chose Dragons for Palace Siege.

Relevant is the APNAP order, an acronym for Active Player, Non-Active Player. Triggered abilities of the active player are put on the stack first, followed by abilities of the non-active player. Since it's your upkeep, Palace Siege's ability will go on the stack first, then the Emblem's will - they resolve from the top, so Emblem's will resolve before the Siege's, and you'll have to discard before you get to return a creature from the graveyard.

Keep in mind, though, that you won't be able to return a card discarded by the Emblem's trigger that just resolved, as you have to choose a target when you put the Siege's ability on the stack, at which time you didn't discard a creature yet.

FYI Sorin's emblem causes a sacrifice, not a discard. This matters for some effects like Waste Not, etc.

Sorry, I meant sacrifice, not discard.

So, if there are no creatures on the battlefield at the start of my upkeep I would not have to sacrifice and I would also get to return a creature from my graveyard?

If so, that is very good news.
