Phyrexian Unlife + Worship

Asked by sergiodelrio 7 years ago

So I have Phyrexian Unlife + Worship out and I have negative life already, say -5. What happens when my opponent resolves a Lightning Bolt?

The way I see it is both cards are a replacement effect, right? So do I get poison counters, or does my life total become 1? Or both? Or do I get to choose?

I believe you get to choose which one triggers first (that one will resolve last, so pick the Phyrexian Unlife trigger first). Worship will see that your life total would be reduced to -8, so, if it triggered last, it will resolve and change your life total to 1 instead. Then Phyrexian Unlife will see that you don't have 0 or less life, so you don't get any poison counters. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's how it works.

Phyrexian Unlife's ability isn't a replacement effect - replacement effects can be identified by the use of the word "instead" - and it's not a triggered ability as Pieguy396 suggested - they use "when," "whenever," or "at". It's a continuous effect; it modifies the effect of damage to you to behave as if the source had infect. So, the Lightning Bolt will deal you 3 poison counters and Worship - which is a replacement effect as indicated by the word "instead" - does nothing because the Bolt isn't reducing your life total and so it does not replace the event.
