Oona's Blackguard and Metallic Mimic

Asked by Hunson_Abadeer 5 years ago

If I have an Oona's Blackguard on the battlefield and then play a Metallic Mimic would the mimic get a counter from the blackguard?

The wording on mimic says “as metallic mimic enters the battlefield choose a creature type”

So I’m unsure if it becomes a rogue after it is on the battlefield and does not trigger blackguard or if it is a rogue at the time it comes onto the battlefield thus triggering blackguard

Please help! Thanks!

Metallic Mimic has a replacement effect. There is no time that he is ever on the battlefield and not the chosen creature type. So he will get the counter from Blackguard assuming you chose rogue.

Triggered abilities begin with when or whenever and they will happen after the event they name. Replacement effects contain the words with, as, or instead and replace the given event. In this case entering as an Artifact Creature - Shapeshifter is replaced with entering as an Artifact Creature - Shapeshifter Rogue

Also note that Oona's Blackguard's relevant ability here is also a replacement effect, assuming you choose rogue Metallic Mimic will enter the battlefield as a rogue with a +1/+1 counter, so it will be a 3/2 allowing it to trigger Elemental Bond, something it wouldn't do if you were using Cathars' Crusade to give it a counter as that is a triggered ability.
