morph flip and death

Asked by piebandit 9 years ago

I have a card like Icefeather Aven, Kheru Spellsnatcher, etc face down. My opponent used Magma Jet on the Icefeather Aven, enough damage to kill it. I paid the morph cost, flipped it up before death to bounce a different creature back to his hand, after which the Icefeather Aven dies. Is that the correct sequence of play?

What if my opponent played, oh, let's say Sorin, Solemn Visitor, and I flipped Kheru Spellsnatcher in response. My opponent responds with Lightning Strike. Since the morph doesn't use the stack, the flip ability goes on the stack, but isn't related to the creature, do I counter the Sorin, Solemn Visitor while Kheru Spellsnatcher dies?

You have the correct sequence, for the first situation, as the Icefeather Aven bounce ability resolves before the Magma Jet does.

For your second situation, Sorin, Solemn Visitor DOES get countered and can be cast from exile etc. The Kheru Spellsnatcher, once its ability triggers after flipping, is separate from said ability, its only link being that it is the source:

112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time wont affect the ability. Note that some abilities cause a source to do something (for example, Prodigal Pyromancer deals 1 damage to target creature or player) rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the zone its expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still perform the action even though it no longer exists.

You are correct in both cases. Flipping up Icefeather Aven or Kheru Spellsnatcher will create a trigger on the stack. In the first Case you will bounce another creature and in the second you will counter a spell ( and have the ability to play it for yourself later). Case 1: You bounce a creature, then Icefeather Aven dies to Magma Jet(and Opponent scrys 2).Case 2: Kheru Spellsnatcher will die to Lightning Strike, then you will counter Sorin, Solemn Visitor.
