Mairsil's interactions with exiled cards

Asked by Drahydra 6 years ago

I have a few questions about Mairsil, the Pretender, as the wording is different from cards like him.

1.) If Mairsil eats a Bomat Courier, would he gain the ability to put cards he exiles back into my hand from the "cage"?

2.) Can he use his activated abilities in zones other than the battlefield? I.E. would eating a Ninja of the Deep Hours or a Dregscape Zombie, allow him to use Ninjutsu or Unearth respectively?

1.) I believe so. Mairsil is the source that exiled the caged cards and Bomat's ability returns all cards exiled by Mairsil, I believe they would return. Interestingly enough, the ability would also return the Courier to hand as well.

2.) No. Mairsil only has the ability use the ability of exiled cards while it is on the battlefield.

  1. No. Bomat Courier's abilities are linked. The activated ability only returns cards exiled by the triggered ability. Because Mairsil, the Pretender only copies the activated ability, it will do nothing on resolution.

  2. No. Mairsil's ability only functions from the battlefield, because it doesn't say that he has the abilities while he's in all zones.

Neotrup is correct. you can't get back cards exiled with mairsil with the courier's activated ability because even though it doesn't specifically say on the card, the activated ability only gets back things exiled with the triggered ability. no to the second question as well because mairsil's ability is static, and so it only functions when he's on the battlefield.
