Lazav plus training grounds combo

Asked by Blindcap 4 years ago

I saw a post on a thread saying that you could do this combo.

Training grounds opens up some infinite's with Pili-Pala, Palladium Myr/Metalworker/Apprentice Wizard and Lazav, the Multifarious by himself as well. As it only costs 1 to switch Lazav, the Multifarious between each creature, and then Pili-Pala, activation is also reduced you can net mana each time to you rotate around Pili-Pala, and one of the mana creatures.

No one on the thread seemed to have a problem with this and no matter how I try and work it it never produces anything.

Please remember to link your cards using double brackets:

[[Pili-Pala]]

Pili-Pala , Palladium Myr , Metalworker , Apprentice Wizard , Lazav, the Multifarious , and Training Grounds .

Training Grounds reduces Pili-Pala 's ability to just ; Turning Lazav into Pili-Pala to ; and turning Lazav into any of the others for .

So, for each option:

  • Lazav turns into Palladium for , and taps for . You are up . Turn it into Pili-Pala, untap, you are up and a colored mana. Spend the to turn back into Lazav, you still have one extra colored mana left over. Repeat forever - each time you will net infinite colored mana.

  • Same for Metalworker , though you need at least one artifact in your hand to get this to work.

  • Apprentice Wizard does not work quite as well - you have to spend the colored mana to activate its tap ability, but you'll still net infinite .

But Training Grounds says "This effect can't reduce the amount of mana an ability costs to activate to less than one mana". Does that effect turning it into Pili-Pala ?

what do you mean by "does that effect turning it into pilli-pala?" thats not a complete sentence.

Caerwyn: Training Grounds cannot reduce the cost of Pili-Pala 's ability to just untapping. it will still cost 1 mana. it will also cost 1 mana for lazav to turn into Pili-Pala . Training Grounds can't reduce the cost to less than 1.

so i don't think this produces infinite mana. it'll cost 1 to turn lazav into palladium, tap for 2 and you're up 1. you'll have to use that 1 to turn into pili-pala. you now have zero floating mana. pili palas ability will cost 1 mana to gain 1 mana. net profit zero mana.

My mistake - I clearly was having a minor brain fart and forgot Training Ground's restriction on reducing the cost below one mana. I'm guessing that the people on the thread might have made the same mistake. Thanks for the correction!

Correctly, you need to produce at least three mana from the combo to break even (one for each of the two transformation, and one for the untap on Pili-Pala). Four if you are using Apprentice, because its mana ability requires you to put mana into it.

Which means this still can work if you have a Metalworker with two artifacts in-hand. The others, not so much.
