Does Demonic Appetite stay on a creature I got from Act of Treason

Asked by Mindlessbuilder 5 years ago

so we all know that if you gain control of an enchanted or equipped creature you do not also gain control of the auras or equipment attached to that creature. Instead those cards stay on your opponent's side of the field. Now let say I cast Act of Treason on a creature my opponent controls, and then cast Demonic Appetite on that creature. Does Demonic Appetite stay on my opponent's side of the field once that creature is returned, or does stay on my side of the field with no valid targets ?

It is best to link the cards you are discussing by putting their name in between [ [] ] (sans spaces):

Demonic Appetite , Act of Treason

"so we all know that if you gain control of an enchanted or equipped creature you do not also gain control of the auras or equipment attached to that creature. Instead those cards stay on your opponent's side of the field." - that is wrong on multiple accounts.

The battlefield has no sides, it is all one zone, so the placing of the cards is only done to accurately represent information. In theory, you can put every permanent in a single pile and the game would not care at all.

Additionally, if you gain control of a creature, the auras/equipment on it go with the creature. You do not control them, your opponent still does, but they go with the creature and your opponent will have to reequip to a different creature if they want to use their own equipment.

Demonic Appetite is no different. Regardless of who controls the creature the aura will trigger on its controller's upkeep (in this case, you) and make them sac a creature.

I take issue with Boza's characterization that you can put all your permanents in a pile. While this would technically be permissible under Rule 403.1 (which only defines the "normal" way of organizing the battlefield), that is not the only rule at play here. There are also countless rules that care about game organization and not wasting game time that would be implicated by using non-standard methods of organizing the battlefield (for example, every card needs a clearly "upright position" so it can be turned sideways to tap--implied by 701.20a).

Further, at professional level tournaments that are being videotaped there is an exact way to organize the battlefield, set forth in the tournament rules.

For reference, here is the rule on how the battlefield is "normally" set up. It specifically mentions auras, as is relevant to your question.

403.1. Most of the area between the players represents the battlefield. The battlefield starts out empty. Permanents a player controls are normally kept in front of them on the battlefield, though there are some cases (such as an Aura attached to another player's permanent) when a permanent one player controls is kept closer to a different player.

Otherwise, Boza's answer as to your actual question is correct--it is only the dicta in the response I take issue with and wanted to provide clarification on.

If you want the specific rule for Auras and their controllers:

303.4e An Aura's controller is separate from the enchanted object's controller or the enchanted player; the two need not be the same. If an Aura enchants an object, changing control of the object doesn't change control of the Aura, and vice versa. Only the Aura's controller can activate its abilities. However, if the Aura grants an ability to the enchanted object (with "gains" or "has"), the enchanted object's controller is the only one who can activate that ability.

Demonic Appetite will be put into the graveyard after the creature returns to your opponents control because it's no longer attached to a legal object.

An aura's "Enchant NN" ability defines the set of legal objects it can be attached to. If it's ever attached to an illegal object then it's put into the graveyard as a state-based action. In your example the "Enchant creature you control" ability on Demonic Appetite means you're only allowed to cast it targeting a creature you control and it can only be attached to a creature you control. If something happens to make you lose control of the creature Demonic Appetite is attached to, it will fall off.

@Boza, cdkime: It's usually best to avoid going into detail about things that don't actually matter to the question. It just introduces more confusion.
