Damnation against commanders

Asked by Guizee 6 years ago

Hi there!

This may seem as a very stupid question but I've searched everywhere about how Damnation would work against a commander creature and I really found nothing clarifying. The question is: If I cast Damnation and it destroys all the commanders on the battlefield, will my opponents be able to recast them?

I know you can't really "exile" a commander because its owner will choose to whether put it on the Command Zone, so I want to find ways to remove certain commanders from play. Thanks in advance.

Yes. The rule for a Commander is that if it would go to the graveyard, exile, library, or hand from anywhere then its owner can choose to put it into the command zone instead. Under normal circumstances, destroying a creature would send it from the battlefield to the graveyard, but if that creature is a Commander then its owner can choose to put it into the command zone.

If you're looking for a way to effectively remove a commander, you have to do it in a way that doesn't cause it to change zone, so I believe your only real options are Darksteel Mutation, Imprisoned in the Moon or Lignify.
