Can Loaming Shaman be reanimated at instant speed to protect against graveyard hate?

Asked by TheVectornaut 8 years ago

Let's say I have several dozen cards in my graveyard including a Loaming Shaman and then a Doomed Necromancer on the field, untapped and ready to go. If my opponent sacrifices a Tormod's Crypt, for example, to exile my graveyard, can I respond by sacrificing the Doomed Necromancer to return a Loaming Shaman to the battlefield]]? And will the Loaming Shaman's ability go on the stack fast enough for me to return my entire graveyard to my library before it gets exiled?

Yes. The Crypt's ability uses the stack, you can respond with your own ability, allowing you to shuffle in your entire graveyard.

Yes.

Tormod's Crypt will go on the stack.

Doomed necromancer will go on the stack, targeting loaming Shaman.

Doomed Necromancer's ability will resolve.

Loaming shaman's ability will go on the stack.

Loaming Shaman's ability will resolve and allow you to shuffle any number of creatures then in your gy into your library (this includes Doomed Necromancer at this time).

Tormod's Crypt will finally resolve, exiling a hot load of nothing important.

Yes it works. The stack looks like this:

[bottom] -> Tormod's Crypt's ability (target: you)

You respond by activating Doomed Necromancer (or whatever - some "fast effect" we used to call them). His ability goes on the stack. The Necromancer is put into the graveyard to pay the cost.

[bottom] -> Tormod's Crypt's ability -> Doomed Necromancer's ability (target: Loaming Shaman)

Doomy's ability resolves, bringing Loaming Shaman to the battlefield. His ability triggers when he enters the battlefield.

[bottom] -> Tormod's Crypt's ability -> Loaming Shaman's ability (target: you, and all of the cards you want in your graveyard)

His ability will resolve next, before Crypt's ability does, and incidentally also potentially getting back the Necromancer.

Edit: i read loaming Shaman wrobg. It's not just creatures. You can shuffle in everything. So disregard that word.

Thank you all. I was fairly certain about being able to respond with the activated ability but much less sure about the ETB ability working in that way. It's good to know that I can use this option after I accidentally baked it into my mainboard while brewing Necrotic Ooze shenanigans.
