Arixmethes gives devotion as a land?

Asked by pedroedmarcos 3 years ago

Hey there,

Its pretty simple: Do Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle counts as devotion to other cards while he is a land? I think this is an unique case and I never thought on it till now. I may be wrong but I think it does cause I think devotion counts the symbols on permanents, but I need to make sure.

Arixmethes does count towards devotion while its a land. Since its ability that turns it into a land doesn't change its mana cost, your devotion doesn't change. This is similar to how cards like Imprisoned in the Moon and Song of the Dryads function. A card that's been turned into a land this way will still affect your devotion.

Speaking more technically, mana cost is a trait defined in the very first layer of a card. This layer largely just defines "copiable values", the things that cards like Clone care about. At this point, the way in which a card will affect devotion is locked in place. Meanwhile, Arixmethes doesn't become a land until layer 4, so quite a bit later.

Fun interaction, you don't see lands that affect your devotion very often.

Hope this helps!!

Exactly. I just realized that and I was so excited about the idea, but I had to make sure. Thanks =D
