Ad Nauseum / Counterpells

Asked by BS-T 8 years ago

I am wondering if someone can explain clearly this hypothetical:

I have a Ravenous Rats (doesn't really matter what!) in play and my opponent decides to Shock it (he's an idiot but it's just an example!)

I can muster 3BBUU but have only one card in hand - ad nauseum

With 3BB I cast the ad nauseum and (somewhat luckily, but hey as I said - it's an example) top-deck a Counterspell, lose 2 life and choose not to go again.

My attachment to the rats is very strong... so I want to keep them around - Can I now Counterspell the Shock??

I'm sure this has something to do with priority but I'm not sure I get another chance to respond to the attempted resolution of the Shock. Thanks for your insights

Ad Nauseam

You do get another chance to counter it! After every instance where something is being put on the stack or resolves, all players have to pass priority in order for the game to advance to the resolution of the next spell. Much like you explained, because Shock is still on the stack after Ad Nauseam resolves and you now have a counterspell in your hand (and lost 2 life), first the active player, then the non-active player gains priority. Whichever one you are, when you have priority, you can cast the Counterspell, and can choose Shock as a target, as it's a spell on the stack.

Ha! Sucker....

The mighty Ravenous Rats live on - and only at a cost of 7mana and 2life :)

Thanks a lot
