Accursed Witch vs Runed Halo

Asked by TanhelNet 1 year ago

When i choose Accursed Witch  Flip with Runed Halo, does it protect me from the death trigger? I don't know if Accursed Witch  Flips controller chooses the target while the witch is still on the bf or after she's flipped.

Thanks for your answers.

It targets as the Accursed Witch  Flip in the GY and enchants as Infectious Curse. Naming either side will keep you from having it attached to you from the death trigger. If you are in a multi-player game they could attach Infectious Curse to another player and move it to you if you had named Accursed Witch  Flip.

Accursed Witch  Flip triggers when it does (i.e. is put into the graveyard from the battlefield), so it's in the graveyard when it triggers.

If you want to avoid this effect, name Infectious Curse with Runed Halo, so the enchantment can't affect you at all.

Accursed Witch being in the graveyard when it triggers does not do anything to stop it from not being able to target you. You can't be targeted by abilities of Accursed Witch if you've named it with Runed Halo, regardless of whether Accursed Witch is on the battlefield or in a graveyard.

Practically, you're safer naming Infectious Curse in either case because, while you'll still be able to be targeted with Accursed Witch's ability if you do, it won't do anything functionally because you can't be enchanted by cards named Infectious Curse. Also as Gidgetimer pointed out, it prevents the Infectious Curse from being moved onto you while already on the battlefield in a way that doesn't involve using Accursed Witch's ability.

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as "you're safer naming Infectious Curse". If you aren't worried about exactly the case of Infectious Curse being moved onto you from someone else it is better to name Accursed Witch  Flip since that also gives you protection from a 4/2 creature as well as the ability from the card after it dies.

Thank you for this advice, but actually i just needed to know how the interaction between both cards works. I think the wording of Accursed Witch  Flip could be more accurate regarding the order in which the single effects of the second ability happen.

Targets are chosen when an ability goes on the stack, but the effect doesn't do anything until it resolves. At that point the instructions are followed in the order written. The LTB ability is from a card named Accursed Witch  Flip that is in the graveyard. So protection from cards named Accursed Witch  Flip will prevent you being chosen as a valid target, despite the curse that would be attached have a different name.

They don't mention this because it is how the game works 100% of the time. The rules of magic will sometimes produce a counter intuitive result, but they are always followed completely logically.

As far as i know, there's a rule that says that a card is resolved in the order of its text, which isn't exactly the case with Accursed Witch  Flip. Following that rule, the text should say something like "...transform it and attach it to target player". (Of course, in better wording). That would be less confusing.

And, i never said that there's no logic. But logic alone doesn't make a game understandable. There are some rulings and card texts which can be confusing without good knowledge of the comprehensive rules. Magic has its weaknesses and one of them is its accessibility. If it would be perfect, every player could learn the full comprehensive rules simply through "learning by doing", which isn't the case. Otherwise, nobody would need websites or threads like these.

And, by the way, i didn't ask the question because i wanted to discuss the quality of the wording or rules. I have the answer i wanted, so please consider this post as closed (as far as i can close a post).
