What to build next?

Modern Deck Help forum

Hey guys,

So i'm looking to build a new competitive deck that I can audible to for modern tournaments. I've been on tron for almost two years now, and I love the deck, but it's getting a bit stale giving the opponent 3 free turns every game. While I was at Louisville this weekend I got turn 3'd a few too many times and it's left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not giving up on tron obviously because the deck's great, but I would like the ability to audible to something that casts relevant cards in the first few turns of the game.

When I posed this question to the guys on my team, they gave me the old 'play with what you know', but I want to learn something new as well. I think I know the format well enough to build a thoughtseize deck, but at the same time i'd like some other input as well.

So basically, what should my next high-tier, tournament play deck be? I'm not looking for any brews, I don't want something that is tier 3 or whatever, just looking to play something that is capable of making plays early in the game. Suggestions?

If you're looking for basically the polar opposite of Tron, Storm can often go off by turn 3. It's really cheap to build, too, especially on MTGO.

When in doubt, storm out!

Gonna have to agree, give Storm a go.

4c shadow aggro might be a good fit of aggroing/t3 wins and early disruption, as you put it a thoughtseize deck. That's part of what makes the deck so brutal.

I'm about to build Living end- reletively cheap (By modern standards) and usually goes off turn 3-4.

Oh, storm you say? Did you mean Puresteel Paladin storm?

Why yes I did. If you look on mtgtop8.com you can see under the "other" combos list that Cheeri0s or Puresteel Storm is starting to work its way into competitive magic. Take a look at my decklist: Puresteel Storm (MDN)

So after some existential thought tonight at work and with it fresh in my memory an opponent calling me scum after I called a judge on them twice in the same round at louisville last weekend, i've decided to go with free win red with a bunch of hate cards in it.

Thanks for the suggestions though!

Have you thought about splashing white for even more free wins? People get really salty when you cast turn 1 Rest in Peace against their Dredge deck. Or drop Kor Firewalker game 1 against Burn.

The red version already has worse versions of both of those cards, and adding white means playing non-basic mountains with a blood moon out which isn't very appealing. Burn is the only deck that poses a huge threat to this sort of strategy because my hate for them is marginal, but I don't think that mandates adding a splash color. I'm in the camp of 'it's fine to have one matchup that you just concede to'. Things like dredge, affinity, or storm - things that get hit hard by the white hate cards - already have weapons against them in this build. Storm is probably the other difficult matchup, but i'm ok with that because very few people play storm in paper in my region.
