Death of the Gods?

Lore forum

So here are the posters for Born of the Gods and Journey into Nyx. Note that in Journey into Nyx not only is Xenagos bigger and more demonic looking, but Ajani and Elspeth are standing atop a mountain of rubble which contains a stature of Erebos and a statue of what I think is Pharika.

I submit that Xenagos kills and absorbs the essence of at least one god, possibly all of them. Without tragedy, there can be no heroics, and with the loss of the gods, Elpseth will be forced back into the multiverse, unable to hide on Theros.

Thoughts?

Poor Elspeth...

I seriously hope that second picture is the art they use for the new Xenagos. It's just so badass.

If what you say is true, I don't think Elspeth will be particularly chuffed at failing to save yet another plane. She's not got a great track record so far.

It looks like Xenagos becomes a god. After all, that is his ultimate goal (according to this). That site also mentions that Heliod calls Xenagos "the Usurper" and has Elspeth take him down. Xenagos is the main antagonist.

What you wrote is probably completely accurate, but I think Xenagos gives up his spark to join the pantheon.

megawurmple says... #5

It has been confirmed that Xenagos will be a god, and will most probably lose his spark in order to do so. No-one would want to see "Legendary Enchantment Creature Planeswalker - Xenagos God" in the typeline of a card.

Quadsimotto says... #6

i would even guess at Xenagos changing from RG to BR as a walker accepting his dark side with vigor. Which would be fine with a lot of Rakdos players i am sure. However if he bocomes a god do you think he would retain his color combo? Or be mono red?

November 18, 2013 6:11 p.m.

twospires says... #7

@TitansFTW I don't even want to see that on a forum. That amount of text on a card would be revolting. But I think there's already a black red god (mentioned in the flavor text of Deathbellow Raider ), while there is no red/green god mentioned in any of the red/green cards in Theros, like there is for all the other colorpairs, and Wizards likes their patterns.

I'm now really hyped for this, I was hoping for some multi coloured gods to appear, but the fact the Xenagos will most likely become a god, then thats awesomeI assume that if the multicoloured gods appear, he will be the RG one, possibly the BR given the way he looks in the art.The problem I see is the whole absorbing other gods, I think it would be kinda of cool if he becomes a god, and in dire times, the other gods fuse or something (simply a personal opinion). But I don't see how he could absorb a gods power or being.

athena95 says... #9

Multicolored gods have long been confirmed Ravonix, the big question is how the hell they will work.

I like Xenagos becoming the RG god, but I also think that Goldmane and Tirel will knock the day lights out of him. And if he does absorb a god, it's gonna be a minor (meaning dual color) god. Maybe some piddle unheard of RG deity who Xenagos drains into a husk

November 19, 2013 6:36 p.m.

Ravonix says... #10

My mistake, I didn't know that multi-coloured gods were confirmed.

November 19, 2013 6:50 p.m.

athena95 says... #11

It's fine, just they are a big mess, from my perspective. Because of Rubblebelt Raiders, Nightveil Specter, and Boros Reckoner the RW, BU, and RG gods are going to be way more playable than the others. I don't see how they can fix 'em up since they also said all gods use devotion.

November 19, 2013 8:47 p.m.

Ravonix says... #12

I'm guessing after coming out of Return to Ravnica block they want to keep a gold theme going, or at least the multi coloured theme.

I guess they will also produce new variants on Boros Reckoner etc... To fuel a dual devotion if that becomes a thing. I guess we'll have wait to see when they give us more info

November 19, 2013 11:48 p.m.

I think it still might be early to say although theres lots of good speculation. But IMO I wouldnt count Elspeth out until you see it. (anyone can correct me if Im wrong because I am wrong occasionally) but whose to say Heliod cant help out Elspeth especially if Xenegos can just find or make hisself godly, there has to be things Heliod can do for Elspeth, or what about the letter to Ajani that Elspeth wrote? Lots of things could happen and I dont think Wizards would spoil these images for the most obvious plots and those be true. Just my opinion, Im really excited to see where the story takes us!

Speaking card wise, what are 1/1's gonna do? :)

November 20, 2013 1:36 a.m.

Low blow, If were speaking card wise, Id rather have three 1/1s over one 2/2 any day. & What's all that extra mana gonna do? Bring out big creatures?

Because...

It would be a shame if...

They had a power of 4 or greater

I like Xenagos' pic of him breaking out of the mountain. Completely BA

At first, I thought the art of Xenagos bursting from the mountain was the art for Mogis, the Black/Red Demi-God of the MInotaurs...

the third picture looks like he stole the 5 main gods powers of weapons. I'm thinking that he may either be a 5 color god or have something like Maze's End but with the gods artifacts.

Anyone else think that the 3rd picture looks like "MummRa" from the Thundercats? If that's the case, then Lion-O will be summoned by Ajani and all of the kitties will battle Xenagos until he is defeated.

SNARF!

quadspell1 I can't see any of the gods' weapons in the 3rd picture. The spear he is holding isn't the Spear of Heliod , if that's what you're thinking.

I do not believe Xenagos coming back later in the block as a God Creature. He might appear back as some mass removal spell like Final Judgment . This happened in some way in the Kamigawa block, where the O-Kagachi is represented in a wrath spell, rather than being a creature :)

November 24, 2013 6:39 p.m.

What my theory is on this is that the old r/g god was missing in action for quite some time. No longer being active such as lying dorment in a volcano. Xenagos after much effort finaly finds the former sleeping r/g god and absorbs him/consumes his power becoming godly himself. It'll probably be some happy fun times fighting amongst the gods and he until he's finally smacked in to submission and then learned his place amongst the pantheon...but who knows...

Tupie_San says... #33

The minor gods will probably animate ones your devotion to either one of their colors is five or more. If that is the case I would expect them to be hybrid. Also the xenagos art could very well be a mass removal spell (as Fizzz said) since the only one in standard atm is supreme verdict. I just can't see that art becoming the art of a god since it's too chaotic. All the other artwork of the gods thusfar have them posing, whereas the art of xenagos looks like he's struggeling with something. To me it looks more like the art of an instant or sorcery.

Desecrate the Sacred 3GRSorcery MythicUntil the end of the turn, all permanents your opponents control lose indestructible. If permanents affect by this would be destroyed this turn, return them to the battlefield under your control.

It allows Xenagos to overthrow the Gods and become the King of the Gods at the same time. This is just an idea of some kind of ultimate spell that Xenagos uses to become a god. Also, let's not forget that when gods manifest in the mortal world, Nyx is woven into their essence and is visible in their forms. The art shows 2 huge Xenagos' that have Nyx woven into their bodies. In the first pic, there isn't much, making him potentially a minor god. In the second one however, he is nearly completely made of Nyx. So he definitely becomes a god, and grows immensely powerful, so why not make him give up his spark, ascend as a God, and then get trapped in some sort of slumbering spell similar to the Eldrazi. After all, RG decks tend to be big and destructive, so maybe the original RG god was on the verge of destroying Theros and so the others, in combination with Heroes and champions, trapped him underneath that soon to be trashed mountain. Xenagos finds him, fuses his essence with the "dead" god and then continues that God's work.

LordoftheReal says... #35

I very much disagree that he will lose his spark. The unique and important thing about Xenagos is he has discovered where the gods and himself stand in the multiverse. He can't be ready to resign to merely be a minor god of a single plane in a VAST multiverse. Either any card(s) he's represented by in either of the next 2 sets do NOT reflect his status as a Planeswalker regardless of retaining his spark, OR he's not getting one at all and Divine Planeswalker Xenagos will merely be the Final Boss of the last event deck of the block.

This article was a good read and delves into the story of what Born of the Gods will be like and explains how the Gods and Theros are intertwined. Xenagos, The Reveler does enter Nyx and becomes a god, yet the Gods can't cast him out nor can he strike them down since he originates from Theros. It's quite interesting and makes me stoked for what is to come, and of the lesser dual coloured gods

January 8, 2014 2:05 a.m.

Thanks DukeNicky
I wonder if those images are of Pharika and Mogis?

January 8, 2014 2:38 a.m.

LordoftheReal says... #38

Probably Pharika and Mogis. OHHH shoot! The gods are essentially giant mana pockets soaked in Nyx or something very similar. Love how Elspeth got the shaft. This is an awesome development.

The gorgon is not Pharika. The it's one of the Nyx born

January 8, 2014 3:15 a.m.

LordoftheReal says... #40

How are you SURE its not Pharika? It could still be, but when it comes down to it, you're probably right. One might imagine she'd be humongous and a lot more Nyx-y.

January 8, 2014 3:26 a.m.

While the image follows the part of the story where creatures of Nyx come into the mortal world. What you claim is so sure not to be Pharika, earlier it mentions the gods are the ones intertwined with the night sky on their physical form. She clearly has the night sky. "sure she may not be Pharika". But its pretty clear the image is a god

MadDreams, because it looks nothing like any of her statues, is not done in the same fashion as the art of the other gods, and because having her in this set doesn't fit from a storyline perspective. We have Xenagos because he just ascended to godliness, Mogis because it is killing everybody Iroas because Mogis, his twin, is attacking the polis he is a patron of, Karametra and Ephara because they were the patrons of the other two polis's that fought against the forces of Mogis with Ellie.
