Which do I take?

I'll be drafting for the first time this evening at my LGS. I have one question though. Go for the money card, or go for the card that could win? (I realize a card is normally both, but I assume there are some cases)

Depends, would you rather have the money card, or would you rather win?

I'd feel more secure in the money card if you didn't care about packs, but that depends on the money card.

Go for money. If it's your first time drafting, it's hard to know how the format plays and it's likely some of the other participants are rather good. One you get the hang of drafting and playing the block, you can up your game. At first, it's usually best to try to recur as much cash as possible for trade fodder and to make drafting even more possible. The only way to get better is to do it often.

If you open a card that is worth more than what you'll probably get from a 3-pack prize (if you even get 3 packs), then take the rare.

Nobody can really blame you for rare-drafting. Unless I'm playing draft at the Pro Tour, I'll just take that foil Garruk, Apex Predator .

@ThatBlueMage Well last time I went to this game store,it was modern with maybe 10 or so people, undefeated got you 30 packs, your chose too if I recall. So winning sounds good, but if I could just pull value, sell it and then buy a box, that sounds pretty good.

Well now after seeing what the rest of you have said, I will most definitely follow the advice of going for the money.

Modern Masters?

That's a different story.

If you get a flat-out amazing card, take it in lieu of the bomb rare (unless there's also, like, Goyf or Bob) and win more packs with it.

Opening packs of Modern Masters yields much more value than opening, say, Gatecrash.

zandl I believe I will be drafting M15, although Modern Masters sounds really fun!

Oh.

Then, yeah.

For M15, take the money card unless you think that one card you pull is going to make you invincible.

zandl Considering it'll be my first time drafting, and second FNM at this store, I don't very many things will make me invincible. hahaha

I also believe going for money is your best bet. It's hard to win a worthwhile amount of packs when you're a new drafter (I've drafted once in my life, pulled an Archangel of Thune so it was alright), and if you get something that you really want for a Commander deck or something like that, don't be scared to take it over what may be the right pick.

I'd try to make the most competitive deck that I could, but if something too valuable to pass up came around, I'd draft it even if it weren't in my colors. That scenario would likely be limited to the planeswalkers and a couple of rares though (Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth & Chord of Calling are the only two that come to mind right now).

sonicizslow make sure you verify whether you are "drafting for picks" or "keeping what you pick" if you have never drafted before. Different stores do drafts differently.

If you're keeping what you pick then going for the money is advisable.

If you draft for picks though you will want to draft the best deck possible and pass money cards you aren't going to use. When drafting like this the rares and foils are pooled together at the end and each player takes turns picking their prize according to the results.
