Cool New Format Idea

The Kitchen Table forum

I have an idea for a new format.

This was partially inspired by CardKingdom's Battle Decks but, it also takes inspiration from EDH as well.

60 card constructed. with the following restrictions

-Silverback (commons and uncommons only)

-General (The onl card in the deck allowed to be a rare or mythic is the general, who follows all of the rules of EDH generals)

I envision that this format would play very well at the kitchen table and could serve as a faster alternative to EDH. This allows a more consistent gameplan and gameplay experience for all involved. Of course Spike can always sleeve up their Kitchen Finks and other OP uncommons but that is their own perogative.

Eternal Rest Battle Deck

Here is a deck I quickly threw together for an example.

What do you think? If you can think of a clever name let's hear it. I believe this could be a fun, competitve but still casual format that could be a quick guide to playing magic for new players but a new frontier for deck design and fun for experienced vets.

It sounds a lot like Noble.

This feels confusing - are you adding a general to constructed decks, but banning all other rares/mythics or are you making EDH 60 card constrcted instead.

Additionally, I do not think how many truly broken commons/uncommons there are. Kitchen finks that you mentioned does not even hold a candle to Cranial Plating or Skullclamp or Dread Return and those cards even cost less than a dollar.

include a banlist of at least what is banned in Modern.

You create a 60 card constructed deck allowing up to four copies of individual cards but you also have a general.

I would shy away from a Day 0 ban list. I would rather see things play out and then ban as needed. However, if I were forced to create a ban list I would combine the legacy and modern ban lists for this format, with the potential to add pauper's as needed.

It does indeed sound like noble but with less restrictive deckbuilding but more restrictive requirements for the "all-star" card.

Hell a good strategy would be to buy a cardkingdom battle deck and then buy a general, BAM, you gotta deck for this yet to be named format.

It wasn't so much as a fix for commander as it was a silly alternate way to play commander with OP consistent decks. Spike's version of EDH

I like the idea, definitely sounds less restrictive than Noble. I would enforce the color identity rules of commander. Other than that, we just need a name.

Also, if you don't have a ban list I'm going to run Sol Ring as a 4 of in every deck I build.

I really like Commando. It is a super good play on Commander and shows the similarities

Okay ;let it be known that on this day, December 7th 2017. Cody Weaver created the Commando format.

Deckbuilding rules are:select a Commander. They can be of any rarity. Your deck must be completely compliant with their color identity. Each time you cast your commander it costs an additional 2 colorless mana. Your commander begins the game in the command zone and if they would be placed anywhere else you may choose to place them into the command zone.

your deck must be exactly 61 cards including your commander.

you may include up to four copies of any non-basic land card in your deck.

your deck, other than your commander, can only be constructed with commons and uncommons. If a card has ever been printed as an uncommon or common it is eligible regardless of it's latest printing's rarity. This rule is the standard but it is optional if agreed upon within playgroups. The spirit of this rule is to keep these from being Legacy decks with Generals. If that is what you desire to play that is fine.

This format is intended to be multiplayer but it can be played 1v1.

All commons and uncommons on the Legacy banned list (as of 12/7/17) are the Day 0 ban list for this format.

any questions about the format can be sent to [email protected]

please build some decks and test them with your friends.
