Need Help with a Mono-Black EDH Voltron Deck

First of all, I've selected Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed as my general, but I need to throw some preferably synergistic cards into the deck to protect both him and me. I'm open to any and all suggestions, not just creatures, though I'm certainly not opposed to using creatures.
I'll probably be using somewhere between 15-20 equipment cards, though that number is subject to change, depending on whether you guys persuade me to use more or less.

I have to say, I think Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed is probably not the best choice as a voltron commander. He's good in a stax deck, but when it comes to voltron, you want to slam your commander once, then start swinging. Having to continuously tap out to keep re-casting and re-equipping seems like a less than optimum position to be in.
I'm not saying you want to use his ability each turn, but the biggest thing about him is his recursion.
Personally I run a Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief voltron deck. I find her to be a good fit as she naturally has a form of evasion as well as a way to buff herself and helping you get the 21 commander damage down as quickly as possible. The deck has been built predominantly for a casual meta but it might give you some ideas - In the Black.

Does Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed survive longer than Sapling of Colfenor? Because I have noticed that giving a commander a way to dodge removal isn't good enough against most removal, which tends to be instant speed.
