Best C14 deck for a tournament

Commander (EDH) forum

With the new commander decks coming out, a shop in my area is doing a swiss style 1v1 tournament where everyone involved plays the new decks straight out of the box. No cards and be removed, and no cards can be added. So with that being said, I was wondering what the tappedout community felt would be the strongest deck without modifications.

I was thinking either the White token or Green Elves decks would be fun, but not sure how well they would stand up to board control. The Black Zombies deck has some good removal spells, but I noticed some of them are restricted to non-black creatures. Thus, that could create some problems if playing against another black deck. I also realize that the Red Artifacts deck has the most value, but not sure how the artifacts mechanic will be working against the other decks.

There are a lot of fun cards in all of these decks so it does make it hard to choose. I will be interested in what you all think. Thanks in advanced. Here are two links for the complete list of cards just in case someone has not seen them yet. Cards Image Gallery and Complete Decklists

The red one has some seriously good creatures such as Wurmcoil Engine , some nice synergy with things like Hoard-Smelter Dragon and Junk Diver , and has decent control options in Blasphemous Act , Magmaquake , and Starstorm .

I would definitely get that.

Really couldn't say for sure but the one thing I would say to remember when dealing with the black decks "non-black" removal is that anyone playing the black deck will have the same limitation. So really you're no worse off.

I am going for the green one as elves are the best (and I need freyalise for another deck)

The problem is that the red removal is sort of a direct counter to the entire green list - ie. deal X damage to every creature sort of shits on elves.

I want to go with the green deck because I think it can get out of hand for your opponent fast, but not sure how well it can adjust if a massive board wipe occurs. Red does not mass tokens like the White or Green decks, but has more effective creatures and artifact support. The red plansewalker also feels more effective since you will be drawing cards rather than creating mana dorks. Of course, each deck will be dependent on the draw and if you pull the right stuff at the right time.

I think that Ezuri, Renegade Leader who comes in the deck is actually a pretty nice commander for the green one.

Very true awesomeguy37. I have gotten so caught up with the idea of using the planeswalker as my general, I keep forgetting I can use a different creature as my general. Using Ezuri, Renegade Leader would give me a chance to avoid mass board wipes a bit. I would be giving up possible ramping potential and card draw. Oh the joys of having various decisions to make!

I know this won't help you choose that much, but pick the one you'd like to play! If you want to play the white tokens or green Elves then do so and don't worry too much about their competitiveness. I suspect ll of the decks will be like most preconstructed decks in that they either flourish or flounder depending on the luck of the draw, and one's competitiveness will likely go down to your political nous and playing skills anyways.

pookypuppy6 makes a very valid point. Even if you go elves and every single other person goes red if they don't get the right cards you can still beat them even with it being a poor matchup as ChiefBell pointed out.

red all the way. i got one to play with and then bought another red and white one to hang onto for a couple of years then sell for beaucoup bucks. I think they will appreciate a lot over a couple of years.
