I Need help for building my first edh deck. started this year with vampires but it was the worst feeling ever for me to pilot the deck but i love the format and i decided to build my deck.

personally i love monks and i was wondering if i could get suggestions on cards strategies and a good commander for the deck (Yes must be tribal monk) I dont have any color preferences for now so every colors are welcome.

thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english.

Here's a list for all your monks; http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?type=+[monk]||subtype=+[monk] it looks like Naya (Green white red) is your best bet. Maybe enchantments? Good luck, commander is great!

I am a bit curious--were you playing with the Vampire preconstructed deck? What did you not like about it? Knowing this information will help provide some more useful feedback, more in-tune with what you enjoy playing.

My gut suggests Narset, Enlightened Master, a deck full of spells, and then monks with Prowess (which many Blue/Red/White monks tend to have). You'd want a fairly low number of creatures, and a high number of instant speed spells (as then you can cast them for free with Narset prior to combat damage).

Narset or Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest are good options for heading the deck, either one will want you to run mostly non-creatures and prowess on your creatures.

If down the road you don't want it to be a theme deck anymore both of these commanders are solid build arounds.

There are other legends, looks like mostly green but I don't think there is quite enough mono-green for a deck. You don't have to run a monk as your commander but you are building a theme deck so may as well stick to the theme.

A lot of the monks focus on noncreature nonland spells though, so building a synergistic tribal deck seems difficult to me. Would love to see what you come up with.

If you’re playing Monks, you’re playing Jeskai (). I second Narset - fun and versatile.

Though if you want to go a completely different direction, Zedruu the Greathearted is a monk....

I've actually made a monk tribal deck if you want to take a look at it.

I also have a complete tribal series if you ever want to make another tribal deck (I know, shameless self promotion :P)

The trick with monks is to get enough non-creature spells because monks tend to care about that, while at the same time having enough monks to make use of them. Personally in my deck I'm able to use Narset, Enlightened Master (main commander) and Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest (secondary commander).

Thanks gave me a lot to think about. Is theme more effective than tribal or are they both effective.

I think [Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest] might make for a great monk tribal commander if you'd like your deck to be a bit spell heavy. If you want the deck to be more creature based however he won't work as well i think

After a lot of play testing I think I'd like a tribal deck focussing on battle tricks. I like to tap my stuff and bashing and I love stuf like knights, monks, soldiers ,warriors etc... You think I could build something potentially viable in any of these tribes ?

There is a lot of potential viable in pretty much any tribe. Those ones are good ones too (I've made a whole EDH series based on tribal decks, so far I'm at 19, with 20 coming soon).

TcgGamerPro - If you want to turn your cards and swing, you don’t want to play monks. Monks is mostly spells and few creatures. Knights, Soldiers, and Warriors are all creature / combat focused.

- For knights, you’re probably best playing Orzhov; you can do straight knights or Vampires.

- For soldiers you want to do boros (multiple combat phases) or mono-white.

- For warriors, you have a lot of options, but I recommend Jund (g/b/r).

Here are two decks I run: (highly recommend both commanders - both are fast and aggressive)

Mono-white soldier tribal:
