After play testing, I've come to the conclusion that having a blue/black manabase just to cast Contraband Kingpin on T2 isn't great. Too many of the original lands came into play tapped, which made for some really awkward T4s. So now the manabase is more basic and (as a bonus) less expensive.

I considered Puresteel Paladin, but adding equipment seems like it would lead to dead draws. Would something like Dark Confidant do the same thing?

I was thinking Retract as well, unfortunately, Retract would return Aetherflux Reservoir back to your hand which defeats the purpose of the deck.
