I started playing in a non-competitive environment, back in August 1994. We could only see the card prices every couple months (they were printed in a magazine) so we really didn't worry to much about the dollar-value and focused more on the "card-value" and the "fun-factor".
We played whatever we could build, and had some pretty crazy house rules to go along with it! Some of my most memorable game moments are from that time. Everything changes however, and some things change definitely for the better!

So here's a quick highlight of my most played decks (at this moment, at any rate):

My Commander decks:

Slivers, finally feat: Sliver Overlord
Heavenly Gehenna feat: Kaalia of the Vast
Vampires feat: Edgar Markov

My 60-card decks:

Tajic's Legions feat Tajic, Blade of the Legion
Huatli & her Dinos feat Huatli, Dinosaur Knight
Hungry Vampires feat: [umm, well vampires]

I recently decided to deconstruct all of my 60-card decks and most of my EDH/Cmdr decks. I've done this for a couple reasons, most immediately:

I wanted to make a deck list for all of my decks anyway, so this is seemed like the best way to do it;

I can recycle some great cards that are sitting dormant in other **(_somewhat mediocre_)** decks;

I can ease my burden of choice when I go to play at FNM or the Card Table at a friend's house; and

with fewer decks to complete, they each benefit from a greater pool of "upgrade" cards, which means (in theory at least) that each deck that remains can be enhanced even more - without resorting to "proxies" and placeholder cards in almost every deck I choose to play.

My newest deck ideas include "Heaven & Hell" (WB Angels/Demons) and "For the Horde" - a 1v1 pair of Commander decks, based on the Blizzard game World of Warcraft.

These are still in the "idea development phase", but I think they'd be a lot of fun, even if only for a 1-off kind of game.
