Zur the Enchanter *f-etch* with tricky auras.
Asked by vic 12 years ago
Would Zur the Enchanter be able to fetch and place Daybreak Coronet onto itself if no other auras were present? And what if you had Diplomatic Immunity already slapped onto him? Could Zur then put on other aura cards?
I think it comes down to the meaning of "put onto the battlefield", when there are also other restrictions involved.
My guess is that both of those maneuvers are allowed.
I would say that you can't place the Daybreak Coronet onto Zur the Enchanter , unless he already has an Aura attached, as that is what Daybreak Coronet specifies.
However, I would assume that you could do the above if Diplomatic Immunity was attached to Zur the Enchanter , as my understanding is that equipping an Aura doesn't count as targeting with a spell or ability.

Aura spells do target, it's just that in this case Zur the Enchanter 's ability doesn't target.

and an aura put into play via zur's ability is not cast, and so is not an aura spell.

if the enchantment specifies the permanent it needs to enchant, and those specifications aren't met e.g. Chimeric Mass is enchanted with Bonds of Faith then turns back into a non-creature permanent. the enchantment is destroyed. so yes Daybreak Coronet would enchant Zur the Enchanter but because Zur isn't enchanted with anything else it would be removed and put into the graveyard. it would be different if Daybreak Coronet said "enchant enchanted creature" or something like that...

The enchantment isn't destroyed, but is sent to the graveyard as a state-based action.
And actually, you couldn't even put the coronet on the field.
303.4g If an Aura is entering the battlefield and there is no legal object or player for it to enchant, the Aura remains in its current zone, unless that zone is the stack. In that case, the Aura is put into its owners graveyard instead of entering the battlefield.

Right, I think gheridarigaaz has a more accurate answer. Also see from Daybreak Coronet :
5/1/2007: If all other Auras attached to the enchanted creature stop enchanting it, Daybreak Coronet will be attached to an illegal permanent and will be put into its owner's graveyard.

gheridarigaaz's answer is not the most accurate one. If Zur isn't already enchanted, then he's not a legal permanent for Daybreak Coronet to be attached to. You can't put Coronet on him at all. The ruling you quoted in your very first response addresses this.

I'm going to need to call for a judge on this one. -- "JUDGE!"

Just to make sure kfcl doesn't have the wrong idea... Aura's do NOT target unless they are being cast. Only while on the stack does an aura actually target. It has nothing to do with Zur's ability (except for the fact you put it into play rather than casting it)

So ironically, the way to get Daybreak Coronet onto him is to have Diplomatic Immunity on there first.

7/15/2006: If you use Zur the Enchanter's triggered ability to search for an Aura, it will be put onto the battlefield attached to an appropriate permanent. It doesn't target that permanent. If no appropriate permanent exists for it to be attached to, that Aura can't be put onto the battlefield and stays in your library.
So, to the first part, no, to the second, yes.
